Images from the Vasa Museum in Stockholm

I took these photos when I was on business in Stockholm, february 2006. The ship is a vast black thing sitting inside its museum - a great contrast to the brightly coloured and cheerful sight she must have made almost four hundred years ago! Handheld photography is difficult here, as the museum is very dimly lit and actually a bit cramped inside. Bring a tripod if ever you venture into this place, camera in hand. And try to keep from laughing at the tourists holding their point-and-shoot cameras out at arm's length, happily snapping away with their flashes going off at every shot. I wonder i any one of them actually got a photo of anything at all?

As a technical note, some of these photos were taken with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 objective, wide open, mounted on my Canon 1D with an adapter. It really is very dark in this place. I have noise-reduced the hell out of the pictures with NeatImage, the results are acceptable rather than great.

My wife and myself has been to the Vasa Museum exactly on the anniversary when it sank, i.e 10 August 2013. We were both excited with what we saw. It is a great wonder and achievement how such a great warship was brought back to life after hundreds of year at the bottom. The warship is a great treasure to all humanity, and the Swedes should be proud of this great monument. Its a must that this museum is not skipped when one travels to Sweden.

One advantage a fast prime will definitely give you is a more precise autofocus. Trying to lock on to the dark bulk of Wasa with a 3.5-5.6 zoom on a consumer-grade camera body is far from a sure thing - I used a Canon 1D for this series and it has top of the line AF which makes it easier. Plus I used f/2.8 lenses which also helps. An f/1.8 will have an easier time of it than the slow zoom.

The slow zoom lens will struggle... unless it has VR/IS in which case it may actually be more useful than a 35/1.8. A larger aperture comes at the cost of smaller depth of field, after all. Today I'd have taken my 24-105 f/4L IS and my 85mm f/1.2L for the best of both worlds!

Next weekend, I'm going to fly over to Stockholm to visit the Vasa. Thank you very much for your comments on lighting conditions in the museum. Seems it might make sense to go shopping tomorrow, and get a 35mm f1.8 for my Nikon rather than trying to get along with the f3.5-5.6 zoom lens.

I went to visit the Vasa nearly thirty years ago when it was housed in a special water tent that kept it sprayed with sea water to keep the timbers from disintegrating. It is amazing and wonderful to see what has happend to this ship since then. Even though the museum was quite smalll and we had to walk along on a catwalk of boards, it was a fabulous experience that inspired pure awe. Saving this treasure is a credit to all who made this possible. If anyone has a chance to go see her, we can surely recommend a visit to the Vasa.

Fascinating - and your narrative adds a great deal. The ship is quite interesting. It's actually a lesson for all of us who work in bureaucracies. Beautiful on paper and sitting quietly at the pier.
