This is a superior photograph of great depth and mood. The "windows" formed by your framing of the trees is a tremendous compositional effect. At first glance I thought it slightly leaned clockwise...but I think that is just an illusion caused by the shadow of the second tree on the right....so nope...no improvement....V
Denis Vincelette17-Mar-2008 22:50
One of those I prefer here ! A fantastic photo Sue .. Congratulations a perfect compo and what a mood .... ouf ! Excellent ! Superior quality photography !

Improve? Now you're just showing off!! Superb image.
Guest 07-Sep-2007 03:50
What a composition! Really a fabulous image.
Guest 12-Aug-2007 06:09
I really like this one too. To me this shot is perfect. I really like how different it is. It's amazing what a difference cropping can make, when compared to your other version. With Copper in the photo the mood changes. I really like both versions. Nice job!
Guest 11-Aug-2007 11:22
Great composition and use of the B&W.

Just adding my 2 cents to the fanclub here. I think this is outstanding and doesn't need to be changed at all. IF you want to change it I don't think you should mess with the crop because as it is, it speaks volumes. If I changed anything I would boost the contrast way up and dodge the visible edges of the dog to make the lighting pop even more. It is an outstanding story telling photo. I wish I'd shot it!
Doug Kessler12-Sep-2006 02:12
Would not change a single thing about this. I think it needs no title (speaks for itself) V

Hello Sue, I meant to come back much sooner then now but have been house moving of late with life all over the place :)
With this image Sue - the composition is strong but slightly 'drafting'. My humble opinion is give a try for a squarer crop to the left, leaving just one tree behind the man. (I tried and thought it gave improved balance between man and dog as pose to viewer's eye wondering away from the subjects........my 2cents worth :)
Richard Calmes30-Aug-2006 10:58
Fantastic image! I wouldn't change anything! V
Guest 30-Aug-2006 05:41
A stunning capture.. the back, mid and foreground has subjects that capture the eye. excellent capture.. i think its already excellent!! no need to adjust.

Please, don't improve. It is perfect. (Unless you tried a close portrait of your man :-))

Guest 27-Aug-2006 22:30
Quite a different composition now where the man is just a supporting character. In fact maybe they are both just supporting characters for the light :)
I think rather than change the picture I'd look for a title that fits with a different story. perhaps 'Lost owner'
Guest 27-Aug-2006 21:19
Really wonderful composition. What I like the most is the colouring though. This sepia like mode really compliment the whole idea behind this frame :)
Guest 27-Aug-2006 19:45
Impressive, love this shot.
Bill Miller27-Aug-2006 16:40
Any improvements would have to be subtle Sue, very slight lightening of the dog to make it stand out a touch. But that is not really necessary, I enjoy this as it is. Great picture...

I think it's beautiful just like it is Sue. ~vote

It's hard to imagine the dog being illuminated in a way that was better suited to this stunningly beautiful image.
Guest 27-Aug-2006 02:32
MIssed the other one - but really truly like this one as is...
Guest 27-Aug-2006 00:48
I find it just fantastic, Sue. I have no idea how to improve it. I'm just impressed by your point of view, your composition, the light, your beautiful black and white. Vote
Guest 26-Aug-2006 12:02
Another voice in the fray, but I really prefer this to the cropped version. It tells so much more of a story-- there's a good sense of separation and isolation here, and the lighting on Copper is perfect as-is. He's half in darkness, but looking out in expectation. The cropped shot is nice, but so much more "flat".
akleja26-Aug-2006 11:57
This is so poetic and soulful. Amazing work. Vote!!
Ken McColl26-Aug-2006 07:20
I prefer this one Sue, so much more depth and 'meat' to get your teeth into :-) KMc
Offer Goldfarb26-Aug-2006 03:55
Sue,both are brilliant images. I prefer the cropped one because the silhouettes give great abstract power, which also give place to imagination . The dog weakened this wonderful peaceful quality.
david procter26-Aug-2006 02:51

This is great. Theres a kind of spooky edge of the world flatness about it. Not sure if you could improve it or it needs improving - the hint of light on copper's face is just enough before youre drawn back into the frame via the shadows to the fringe of trees and the figure. ace!
Guest 25-Aug-2006 20:39
perfect

I do not think that you need to change the light/shade balance, everything in harmony here. Composition is very nice, I like the full frame better than cropped one and my argument is that man in too centered on crop version. Here the dog gives that necessary asymmetry. Very creative and thoughtful, Sue, admire the way you used the light.
Fong Lam25-Aug-2006 15:52
Each version has its own merits......superb shot! Big vote.
Guest 25-Aug-2006 13:41
Wonderful work! Lots of different elements in the photo...very unique and interesting to view! I won't change a thing. I can see Copper just fine, his partial white coat helps him stand out in the shade. Voted!

WOOOOW! I'm speechless! Big vote!

This is a wonderful image...Love the lighting, wouldn't change a thing.
carol j. phipps25-Aug-2006 12:46
Only the shadows connect them! Potent.
carol j. phipps25-Aug-2006 12:46
Powerful portrait! The story I get from the image is the dog waiting and the person in the distance, alone and waiting; pathos in picture; so close yet apart. Vote.
Yvonne25-Aug-2006 12:35
I like it as it is too, and I especially love those long shadows.
CIS25-Aug-2006 12:04
Ohhh my, this is absolutely Remarkable!!! GMV
The pano was excellent but the angled perspective lines with the dog anchoring it adds so much more!
Eckhart Derschmidt25-Aug-2006 11:51
Just learned from later comments that you had already posted a cropped version of this image before (how could I miss that?). Kind of picture in the picture - they work very very independently from one another so I see them rather two separate images than two versions of one. The merit of the uncropped version is that one sees the whole lenth of the shadows, which makes the athmosphere a bit surreal. But of course both are excellent.
Guest 25-Aug-2006 11:39
It's a fine image, but I prefer the cropped version only because there are now two characters in this image and (without knowing that Copper is your dog) one wonders what is the relationship between the two.
QUERIDO25-Aug-2006 11:11
very nice shot, GMV
Guest 25-Aug-2006 11:09
This is even nicer than the cropped one. Big V
Craig Persel25-Aug-2006 10:59
Magnificent.
Guenter Eh25-Aug-2006 09:08
It`s perfect as is Sue! Fully agree with Eckhart!
Eckhart Derschmidt25-Aug-2006 07:33
Nothing to improve on this one (although that is probably not the kind of reaction you expected. Of course it would be possible to light up the dog somehow, but I think it would look too artificial then). Its just perfect! Big vote.
