A View Down from My Living Quarters

New City --- Sana'a, Yemen

My room at the Yemen Institute of the Arabic Language overlooks an energetic but very poor neighborhood. Children are constantly playing in the streets --- I assume because they have no cable TV, computer or internet connection to keep them busy inside. Straight down from my window, I have a view of the zigzagged entry to a family residence. Everyday I see the women of the household in this cluttered area, carrying great jugs of water, doing laundry by hand, washing each other's hair or playing with small children. Almost no Yemeni women work outside the home; if they do, they typically have jobs requiring an education: lawyer, teacher, doctor.
