March 22, 2005 - Volleyball Ballet

Pinckney, Mich.

My first attempt at shooting sports, despite 25 years as a journalist. I learned a valuable lesson
tonight. It's not easy shooting sports. Bad lighting conditions and fast action make it a very difficult
job. Much easier shooting the murderers and rapists on the perp walk when I was a young reporter/photographer.

Nice action shoot. You could try using iso 1600. A little bit of noise but I think you could handle with that lens f2.5. I have some basketball shoot with iso 1600 and using my 70-300 mm 4-5.6 lens, even though I guess I need a lens like yours :-D

WOW, I like this. They do look very graceful!

Nice action shot for a first try. I agree, it is tough shooting action in poor lighting. 800 ISO looks pretty good here though.

Very Nice, if you would like a challenge, try shooting Ice Hockey! Going from bright to dismal in 200 feet! Having a f/2.8 lens helps, but that wide open lens creates a shallow DOF. I have gone to center focus only on all of my indoor sports photography. On my DR I have gone to mostly 400 ISO using a 100mm f/2.0 USM or a 200mm f/2.8L and using shutter priority set at 1/500 or higher if possible.

You did a great job of this, Steve.

Sorry about the typo.

I think this is a good action shot. As you said lighting and speed make it very difficult. I have only done sports once and it was twenty yeras ago. At the time I used 1000 asa film. I have been loosing my mind for two weeks trying to get them in condition to up load. Regards!

This photo may also look nice in B&W.

Not too bad, Steve. I haven't gotten a handful of decent shots of Josh's wrestling meets this year. Hope you will be shooting more indoor sports.... I'd like to learn from you!

It is difficult, but this looks great. High School sports are the toughest, since the lighting usually isn't as good as professional sports.
