Strange day today. After working 14 hours straight overnight, supervising election coverage
at the newspaper, I dragged myself home and fell asleep for about four hours. I woke up still
tired but feeling low and out of sorts, so I went for a ride in my car, hoping to see something
that would cheer me up. Seeing all the political signs, even out in the sticks, just made it worse.
Then I saw a for sale sign for a house sitting on a five-acre wooded lot , so pulled down the dirt path
where I met a guy who with his wife was renting an apartment in a carriage barn about 300 feet
from the main house. He was a young guy and very pleasant, telling me all about the property.
Then we talked a bit about a great place nearby to hike and a trip he took to Europe this summer
with his wife. I left feeling a bit less sad and continued driving along this rural road until I noticed how
the setting sun was shining through the mass of trees along side the road. I stopped, of course,
got out of my car and began shooting. I left there not knowing if I had captured the true essence
and beauty of what I saw, but feeling better with the hope that maybe there will come a light to shine
through this dark forest that we seem to be lost in anymore.
