July 23, 2004 - Eye on the girl

New York City

I took this photo late last month when I was in New York, but it fell out of my radar screen when
I processed an initial bunch of photos. I found it again today and post-processed it. The guy sitting
on the sidewalk was one of the few homeless/street people I saw in Manhatten and he seemed
pretty out of it but perked right up when this woman walked by. I also processed it as a black & white,
but couldn't make up my mind which version I liked better.

Very interesting. Some of the other comments are very insightful too. It seems odd to think about that moment in time frozen and on your site now... where are those people now and might they ever cross paths again?

These are some of my favorite types of photographs. Have you ever seen Gary Winograd's work? It's mostly like this. It's funny...the facial expression of the man with the coke looks different in the window than it does on him.

I take a lot of NYC candids and found that B&W is generaly better for beggar shots although in this case I like the color because of her hair dye and his graphic design shirt. But great capture either way.

Yes, the colour one, although the whole scene is good. I've just played with your shot to see what it would look like with the left 50% being monochrome and the rest in colour. I feel this image has possibilities!

Great shot Steve! I like the colour version. It has more life in it some how! The woman and man seem to grab our attention with more 'punch' in the colour version.

Both are fantastic, but I prefer the black and white. In either case, this is an awesome capture. Perfect timing.

I like the color version much more... I think because the girl and man looking at her are sort of lost in the b&w version.

I like this a lot. My eye keeps following a geometrical pattern from the face to face to cup to face--very nice!

I like this sort of street photography! I think both the colour and the mono shot work - the colour one seems to emphasise the differences in lifestyle between the beggar and the lady walking past but the mono one is has a more reportage/dynamic feel. tough call to say which I prefer - the mono one possibly, but that's just me. ;)

This is fantastic! And I agree that the color is the better of the two. The color on the girl's shirt just accents the struggle of the begger. Very nice work!!

I saw both versions and like them both. I like the set-up here; how far away from the subjects were you?
The almost incidental guy in the background is perfect, lost in his thoughts, completely unaware of what's going on just before him or what he might be walking towards.
I'm heading to Manhattan next week and I'm hoping to grab all sorts of shots like this. Great job.

In viewing this in color it evokes energy of street life. One can feel the humidity of a New York summer, the rush to reach a destination. Where as with the blk/white version one sences IMHO the apathy, stark reality of homelessness. My eye is drawn toward the expressions more so. Both are good.
