American White Pelican
WD: Note where the black is on the primaries and outer secondaries. It is easy to overlook details like this on birds that are seen a lot and are easy to identify. Then when something different is seen at a great distance, like Snow Geese or Whooping Cranes, the knowledge is not there to reference quickly. This is a problem for even advanced birders, perhaps more so. It pays to make a conscious effort to note the marks on a bird, even a familiar one, or remember to bring your camera.
