WD: two 1st winter Herrings in the background are identifiable, note the black tertials and dark outer greater coverts.
Gull watchers distinguish between various shades of pink legs. Flesh pink is the subdued pink usually exhibited by 1st winter Herring Gulls. The legs of Thayer's and Glaucous Gulls are often described as bubble gum pink, a brighter color, sometimes shockingly bright. A few Herring Gulls will have
relatively bright pink legs. The legs of Bonaparte's are a very bright color, redder than the larger gulls -- not a very necessary mark for birders with some experience with Bonaparte's, but handy for the folks just starting out. Sibley shows a much more subdued color pink for some reason. The legs of
the very similar looking Black-headed Gull are more orange, an extremely rare bird in our area.
