WD: 1st winter Herring Gull, note the all black bill and rounded head is a good start on Thayer's, but the tertials and outer greater coverts are too dark. You can just about see the brown and white pattern on the coverts, and it is not the neatly barred and finely checkered pattern which is usual on Thayer's (and a minority of Herrings).
