This young Cooper's Hawk has been keeping birds away from our feeders off and on for the past week.

On our way to Rose Lake, I noticed some crows in a tree with a hawk on the south side of US66, just east of Sara Rd. When we u-turned and Mary got a picture of them, we discovered the Red-Tailed Hawk had been feasting on a prairie dog from the town that is at that corner. The hawk didn't like our intrusion and flew off to the west with one or two crows in pursuit.

Over at Lake Overholser, we saw 18 or more Great Blue Herons seeking shelter from the north wind along the north and NE shoreline. There were also these Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, some standing on ice.

On the NW side of the lake, Mary spotted this male Belted Kingfisher sitting out over the water, chattering.

Just a short way farther south, we saw this male Yellow-shafted Flicker chirping along the shoreline.

Near the fishing pier in the SW corner of the lake, we saw these female Scaup.

This was one of two Canvasbacks we saw in the SW corner of the lake.

On the day after Groundhog Day, after a visit to Mustang, I decided to drive over to the airport to look for the Short-Eared Owls again (on our last visit they hadn't come out till after dark). As I drove N on Portland from SW 104th, this one watched me go by.

I think I saw 2-3 owls, in addition to several hawks and meadowlarks. This Short-Eared Owl sat on the barbed wire atop the fence bordering the airport on the west side of Portland.
