Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam, October 6, 2006.
The upstream end of the dam.
Land around the upstream end.
They're building a bypass road to reduce traffic over the dam...
...you can see how high up the road will be eventually.
The dam's intake towers - the one in the foreground is in Arizona, the two in back are in Nevada.
Looking upstream - the white band is the high-water mark, which hasn't been hit in over 20 years.
Some interesting-looking machinery.
Looking toward the downstream side.
A closer view.
Looking down at the curve of the dam.
Downstream from the dam, through Black Canyon.
When the dam is venting water, it comes out of these buildings. Unfortunately, the level's too low right now to see that.
The whole dam complex is a fabulous example of Art Deco architecture, particularly these angels.
Another view. The angels' toes supposedly bring good luck if you rub them.
A close-up of one of the angels.
Looking upstream past the Nevada intake towers.
Another view upstream.
Me at the Nevada-Arizona state line (I'm in Arizona).
The massive curve of the dam.
