There used to be some sort of structure on the flat upper part of the roof. I believe it was removed in the 70's or 80's. It may have been similar to a "widows walk". Not sure if there any photo's which show it clearly but there is one taken in the 1940's of The massee next door in which you can see it although it is somewhat obscured by tree cover.
