This fellow came to our feeder today, there was an approaching cold front and snow forecast, there were many birds.
Over the years we have had family of Nuthatches take sunflower seeds and poke them into the bark of the oak tree where he could open them. Over the years they have caused a large wound on the tree, as they go to the same spot all the time. Today the woodpecker took sunflower seeds and went to the very same damaged spot on the tree and opened the seed. All this was very odd to me, as if he had watched the Nuthatch and learned. I had no idea woodpeckers ate seeds.
