In Illinois we seem to have a strange compulsion to dye
the water. On St. Patrick's Day, city workers dye the
Chicago River antifreeze green. In the summer, ponds like
this get dyed blue. Now all the male mallard ducks are
waddling around with blue heads instead of their usual
emerald green. I could understand treating the water to
keep down algae and possible pollutants...but why throw
in the blue on top of it? Mysteries never cease.
