Thank you, Larry. This was one of those bright spots where something bad that I thought was happening turned out to be quite all right.
We lost our beautiful blue fir a few months ago to blight. It's needles turned orange and, like the blue firs at our neighbors' homes, it died. So when I saw these other evergreens in different places around town turning bright orange I thought---yeah, here they go down the tubes.
But no! Turns out that I just didn't know my evergreens. These are supposed to turn orange in the fall. They're larches---they have cones and they belong to the evergreen group, but they shed their needles every autumn. It's A-Okay.
Doesn't bring back our poor blue fir. But on the whole, it was a good discovery.
And they are indeed quite pretty. Prickly, but pretty.
