This is a panoramic silhouette of two sand hill cranes against the early morning sunrise sky taken in the late Fall of 2003 at Bosque Del Apache (in New Mexico -- http://southwest.fws.gov/refuges/newmex/bosque/). This is a popular winter destination for all types of birds from roadrunners, eagles, haws and cranes.
Shot with the 400mm f2.8L IS hand held, this is one of the few so-so shots that I got on a two day stop. There may have been as many people there as birds. I am not sure:-)
I like this image with its out of focus mountains in the background with the birds flying into the frame. The various swirls in the diffuse clouds helps set the image of powered flight by the birds.
