This is a true story , with pictures about my experience at the West Wetland Park in Yuma, Arizona,USA. In February, the hummers are nesting. Six nests were discovered in a very small area of the park. Some were higher in the trees but some were no more than 3 feet off the ground. I visited often and took my pictures of the eggs and babies, when the mother left the nest, so as not to disturb the mother. A lot of patience was needed. I watched the growth of the babies. One day when I came by one of the lower nests was on the ground and no babies were to be seen. I went to another of the lower nests and discovered that some interfering-with nature- person had put a piece of paper on the branch to shade the little ones from the blazing sun (low 90 degrees F.) This really was upsetting as I was sure that whomever did this probably was trying to do the same to the other nest and accidentally knocked it down. ( One should never be too hasty to draw conclusions) As I set up tripod and zoom to capture a fledgling that was soon to take off, along came a roadrunner and flew to the nest with the fledgling. Everything happened so fast, I could not get the action, however, the roadrunner forced the fledgling to fly. The last picture shows him on a branch with his wound on his chest--a close call indeed. To my surprize, this roadrunner knew about every other nest, so indeed it might have been the source of the fallen nest. I learned that day that a roadrunner is enemy #1 to the little hummers.
