The trumpeter swans were nesting on the south side of the county road and their nest was fairly visible. They returned to the marsh in our front yard when the cygnets were approx a week old. They spent more time on this side, but we did not see them during the last week in May or for the month of June (we were busy in the fields and did not go down to the marsh as frequently). They had 5 cygnets but lost 4 ...
Sunday evening (July 22) we attempted to drive up our driveway but the Trumpeter Swans & cygnet were reluctant to move out of our way. We were close enough to see a leg band on one of the swans # 20933.
After ~ 10 minutes were proceeded up the driveway & the swans went into the creek.
** Monday evening we heard calls that we thought were from the cygnet (not as strong as the adult calls). On Wednesday, the adults were calling so I went down to the marsh to see what was happening. There were 2 adult swans in the SE section of the marsh ... cygnet was not visible. This past Saturday (July 28) the Trumpeter Swans were calling once more. This time they were in the east section of the marsh ... the cygnet was not visible. Wye Marsh has confirmed that the adult swan #933 was born in 2003 and released into the Rankin River in June 2005. This is the female that nested with the tagged male #934 in 2007 ....
