On Tuesday, we headed into the interior of the park, accessible only by snow coach or snow mobile. It took about 4 hours to get down to Old Faithful with plenty of stops along the way for sightseeing and photo ops. Our snow coach was one of the new Mattracks vehicles - each of the 4 tracks costs about $5K, but they can be switched out and used as wheeled vans during other seasons.
On our trip back up to Mammoth, it was slow going part of the way as we ended up following 2 bison bulls for several miles. Winter is a harsh test of endurance for wildlife, and for people to do anything to cause animals to use excessive energy is discouraged - so, since the bison wouldn't allow us to pass, we slowpoked along behind them for at least 30 minutes. We didn't mind - it just prolonged our fantastic vacation a little bit longer!
