Mattie is Resting In Heaven 07_09_06.jpg

This grave is near where Nez Perce Creek and the Firehole Rive meet. I had never noticed it in all my visits to this area. It is such a beautiful place to be laid to rest for all eternity.

The marker made me curious about the young woman buried here. Why was she here in early March 1889; a time of year when this area would still be deep in the grip of winter. I wondered why she died so young. Was it the cold or something else.

With a little research I found she died of tuberculosis. Her husband had moved here a couple of years earlier to work in a hotel and with a hope the mountain air would help his young wife. He had the job of winter caretaker of the now long gone Firehole Hotel.

I'm reminded of a few lines from Cross Fire Trail. One cowboy ask another, "Is this heaven?" "Nope, its Wyoming" the other cowboy answers.
