A Summer Moon 07_19_05.jpg

Just for fun I thought I would shoot the moon with the 300f/2.8L IS plus stacked EF 1.4xII and 2xII extenders for a total of 840mm. I think it turned out ok.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM
1/20s f/11.0 at 600.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Honestly i would have hesitated to stack both converters but it did work out nicely. The details on the side craters are quite nice. There is a little loss of contrast in the mid section that you can correct either with photoshop or have you tried overlaying two identical shots !?
Nice shot anyhow.

I think it works :)

Very nice. Better than mine at 280mm.

Bill, take your original converted image, don’t resize and in Photoshop punch the saturation. REALLY punch it. I think you will be astonished at the colors that comes out on the moon’s surface. Try it, … you’ll like it! (It will not work very well with this resized JPG, … for the best results use the original image from the camera converted to TIFF.) Enjoy!

Robin, the extenders do hurt sharpness a little. It is hardly noticeable with just the 1.4x added. There is a noticeable degrading of sharpness with the 2x added but it isn't all that bad. I would say with the extenders stacked it is very noticeably softer but the images are still very usable. I think this says more about just how fantastic the Canon EF 300f/2.8L IS lens really is...oh yeah it is sharp!

Very nice

It turned out quite well Bill. I'm most impressed that those extenders didn't damage the sharpness at all.

Looks great!
I tried to shoot the full moon from the boat last night but there was just too much movement.
Nice shot.

Thanks for the tip, I did not realize you could stack the extenders.

Love your modesty, but you could have used 'spectacular' and still have been modest! :)
