Bathed In Moon Beams 06_22_05.jpg

This is an image I have been thinking about for some time. You may have seen the Grotto Falls in some other photos of mine or Wes's. It is such a pretty place and a beautiful little hike. Tonight Wanda and I made that hike by the light of the full moon. The moon light was so bright I think you could have read a newspaper. This was such a fun photograph to make.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
10s f/7.1 at 24.0mm iso400 with Flash full exif

this is really cool, the whole bluish hue looks like some kind of fairy land. you should have tied wings on Wanda.

Painting with a flash light is really pretty simple. Get a nice bright flash light, set a long exposure of a subject in a dark place and then just point the flash light where you want things exposed.

Bill, you had to know a comment like this is coming.
Next time could you point the flashlight at Wanda a little more so we can see how cold the water really is.
Sorry, that's just me. Really this is a lovely image, Wanda is such a trooper.
Regards Jim

In this shot i painted the waterfall leaving the light a little linger on the top and where the fall hit. I painted up into the foreground a little and then some of the edges of the rock faces. The fun part is rarely will two images be the same. That is also the down side. It is hard to have complete and consistent control.

I could have just used a flash here but then the light would be flat and even. With the flashlight you get depth from the shadows and you can highlight what you want.

There is way too much room light bouncing off my screen - so much that at first I didn't even see Wanda. But the pic is so remarkable, that even without her, I was going to vote for it ( no offense intended Wanda). Like John, I would like to know more about the "painted with a flashlight" part.
Thanks again to both of you

Bill, you mentioned the use of a softbox...have you ever used that while doing a bit of macro photography? And when you say "painted with a flashlight"...where in this particular image...just curious.

Very, very cool (Wanda might say cold). This image again reminds me of a quaility illustration. Hats off to both of you.

I have had few ask how this was lit. Some of it was from just the bright full moon. I used my 550EX with a Lumiquest softbox mounted down 1/2 a stop from ambient light. This was used to freeze Wanda (as if she wasn't freezing already; it was 52 degrees and the water is right from the melting snow) Then I painted the scene with my little but very bright flashlight.

beautiful.... lighting, composition, everything!

Wow, this is stunning! She could be a water nymph or mermaid, especially with the bluish cast from the water. Very magical. You both must be very happy with this. gmv!

John, your comment about it looking like a Maxfield Parrish painting really thrilled me. It is exactly the look I was hoping for in this image. Wanda and I had discussed it before we took the photo. I toyed with really going for more color to the point of postorization to even give it more of that feel. Instead I went more subdued and kept things closer to natural and left it more "Photograph" looking.

Again thanks everyone for your comments.

I have to agree with Gary...Awesome...
The detail in the stone and color...
And the contrast in texture from the harsh rock to Wanda's smooth skin...
Beautiful image...

Nice to see your idea brought to fruititon here...

Fantastic image and idea.
This reminds me of some of the posters from the 30's, Maxfield Parrish I think the name was.
You need to offer this one for sale.

Awesome job on this one Bill!

Bill, that's a pretty amazing photo..love the blue tone to the image. BTW, the images that Wanda has been taking are very nice...she has a very good eye for composition. Have you started working with her in PS yet? I'd keep my eye on your 20D and the 300 f/2.8 if I were you..she might start getting equipment envy!

Take care.
