Wanda08_03_04bBW.jpg

I thought I would go for something more artistic again today. I really like this image because it speaks to me. Wanda much preferred this image http://www.pbase.com/image/32166410 and I agree it is prettier but today's image is more moving to me.

Bill and Wanda ... I just can NOT decide which image I like better ... but although I normally prefer color to B&W, I have to admit that this image is a far more profound and powerful image. I find I have to agree with Howard Sandler that the hands in the color photo look "contrived and unnatural". (Read that "posed".) That doesn't mean that it's bad ... just a more "posed" look.

When Bill asked Me to do this "kneeling in prayer" pose I knew those who REALLY knew Me wouldn't be able to resist making some kind of facetious comment. Sure enough, our daughter Brandy said to Me, "So, I didn't know you and dad were doing comedy these days." (keep in mind that quote is not verbatim)

Hi Bill, I prefer the colour one. The main reason is that the conversion to greyscale has made Wanda's lips fade to almost skin colour.

Try using the channel mixer to get the contrast between lips and skin back a bit. Alternatively, when Wnada is putting on her make up, give her a piece of red colour gel to look through, and she will be able to see which lipstick has no contrast and which one does.

Try a roll of black and white film, and you will really see the differences.

The image indicates pleading expression. Asking for something, is it clothes ;-)
Well a very artistic photograph. better than most!

I agree with Howard. The color shot looks too contrived. This one looks more like you captured the moment instead of staging it.

I think I would agree with Wanda, and prefer the other image (mostly because of her eyes) but both are awsome. Like you said, this one "speaks to you", the man behind the camera. Great Job William!

The expression in the color shot is more pleasing. Both are good, but the color one is better.
Howard Sandler04-Aug-2004 11:16
I think this shot has far more impact than the colour one. The hand pose in the other looks contrived and unnatural; this looks sincere and goes with the facial expression. The interesting crop with lots of black space to the left works much better here than the other, which is more of a straight portrait. For emotion, which after all is what art is for, this clicks for me. Congrats to model and photographer!

I, however, love the look on her face. I know exactly what she is thinking. It's the hope of hopes for something. Something wanted so bad you can taste it. My opinion is that this shot conveys a sense of man---materialistic, the want for "stuff" and "I want it now!" Wonderful catch. I'm still at odds over your shots. Is it the photographer that makes your shots so good, or is it your subject? I lean to the subject...but you ARE a fabulous photographer. :p

I think the two shots are really very different -- in mood and impact as well as expression and color. The latter two obviously have a great deal to do with the former.

I think this is a very nice pose and awesome in b&w.
However, her facial expression is absolutly perfect in the color shot.
In this shot, she looks like she's gritting her teeth.
Mix the two and you have a sure thing.
