...Porsche 916 Magnesium Racing Gearbox - Sold to Marco Marinello of ELEVENPARTS AG, Switzerland.
Was for sale on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150159415150
This is the very rare factory original 916 Magnesium Racing Gearbox designed for a mid-engine race car, of course, a Porsche! The gearbox was completely rebuilt and has ZERO miles, as a matter of fact, it does not have any oil in it yet! ; )
Incidentally, the 916 gearbox can be easily converted to RSR spec. as it is the same gearbox used by both Porsche race cars with a few differences; the 911 RSR uses a different rear Magnesium tail-housing https://pbase.com/slidevalve911rsr/image/56767520 designed for a rear engine application (911), the external shift-mechanism is also different between the two and the ring/pinion assembly has to be flipped on the 916 for a mid-engine application. Both gearboxes can use the same gearing, they both use the same internal mechanical spray-bar and oil pick-up https://pbase.com/slidevalve911rsr/image/65363814 lubrication fed by the small 2-gear mechanical oil-pump located in the tail-housing. There is a provision to connect a small gearbox oil-cooler as well https://pbase.com/slidevalve911rsr/image/65363822 - https://pbase.com/slidevalve911rsr/image/65363799
SPECS: I'll have to find the gear chart but I do know it has a limited-slip set at 80% as well as a 7:31 Ring/Pinion.
Serious inquiries only. If interested, I can be reached via email at ajserrano@msn.com
Hello again Leon, just as I suspected, the 908 gearbox (916) gear-sets/gears are NOT even close to the gear sets used by the 915. Not to confuse this subject, but Porsche originally used the number designation "916" to identify the 908 gearbox which came long before the 915/916 gearboxes used by the 911 and 914-6 race cars.
Unfortunately, Porsche overused the number designation "916" for several components creating the confusion we have at hand today.
I hope I somewhat clarified this issue.
PS: Don't ask me who at Porsche decided to label the converted 915 gearbox a 916 (conversion from a rear engine to mid-engine application). I have no clue who or why...
Hello Leon and thank you for the offer on the 916 gearbox ratios, etc.
The 916 gearbox used by the Porsche 908 and this 916 are very different and I'm not sure if the gear sets are interchangable, I'm guessing they're not and will contact Carl Thompson to verify as I personally watched him and Armando DeLa Rosa build several brand new 908 gearboxes in his shop from scratch using parts off the shelf. Those gearboxes were sent to Moore Speed in Northern Californiat for their 908 projects.
The 916 gearbox is essentially a Magnesium 915 gearbox just like the 911 RSR but converted for a mid-engine application such as the 914-6 (the Magnesium tail-housing was clearly designed for that application).
Thanks again!
Leon

Hi Armano
I have a lot of info on 916 gearboxes. I obtained some factory manuals for this gearbox from a x factory mechanic. He received all the info as part of his training on the 908. i even have a gear ratio chart about 4 A4 pages. Then al l the gear ratios and what to use on which track. i also have the specs for the limited slip diff.
