Estes Park is a town at about 7500’ elevation, about 70miles west of downtown Denver in the Rocky Mountains. The Mrs. often works at a YMCA camp there in the summer, and I was up visiting her. One evening she decided that we should try Wapita Pub for dinner. Wapita is a Shawnee Indian word which means “white butt of the elk”. On the menu they had a Reuben, and since it had been a while since I had one, I decided to go for it.
The $14.99 sandwich came with a side of steak fries. The corned beef was tender and plentiful. It is cooked in beer to help the tenderness and flavor, which helped. There were two thick slices of Swiss cheese between the rye bread and the sauerkraut, and for a few bites the cheese dripped off the sandwich as I pulled it away from my mouth. Speaking of sauerkraut, it could have used more of it. The same could be said of the dressing, which was also a bit on the sweet side for me. One or two bites of the Reuben presented a salty taste- not sure what was going on there but did not happen the rest of the sandwich. The marble rye bread was just a bit too crunchy, particularly around the edges and it was not from being burned. Overall I think it was an OK Reuben and am going to give it a "C" since the corned beef was good, but the rest of the classic combo needs some work.
