Also nicknamed as "Venice of Hong Kong". It originally is a fishing village at Lantau Island. The local people used to live in the special-design huts, which are based on stilted structure (棚屋). However, a fire broke out in 2000 and part of the huts are destroyed. As a result, Hong Kong Government accelerates the restoration and development of Tai O as an important tourist area in Hong Kong. Second Visit on Dec 27, 2007: After 4-hour hiking from Tung Chung, I was still excited about visiting Tai O. The fire in 2000 destroyed the stilted huts in Sha Tsai Min (沙仔面) and it was fully recovered during these years. You can say the differences by comparing these two sets of photos. Now I can say that Tai O becomes a famous attractions of Hong Kong. It makes me uneasy to walk through the small but overcrowded street. By the way, I am still enjoy being here.
