The major ethnic group living in Lijiang (麗江) is Naxi (納西) people. The unique Naxi civilization is reflected in form of Dongba pictographs (東巴象形文字) and Naxi music. Dongba pictographs is the only exisiting pictographs widely used by Naxi people. Naxi music assililates the culture of other ethnic groups to get a particular sound. Lijiang old city was started in Song Dynasty (宋朝). Its present outlook have already established since Ming Dynasty (明朝). Lijiang is distinct from other ancient cities by the absence of wall surrounding the city. It indicates Lijiang is the land full of peace.
Hutiao (meaning Tiger Leaping) Gorge (虎跳峽) is located at Jinsha River (金沙江) between the vallery of Haba Mountain (哈巴雪山) and Yulong Mountain (玉龍雪山). The narrowest part is only wide 20m. In the traditional folk story, there was a tiger leaping across the river, so it is called.
Yulong Mountain is located 15km north of Lijiang Old City. Although the highest altitude of Yulong is 5596m, that is much lower than Mount Everest, no one can climb up to the summit. In the east side of Yulong, there is a grassland called Yushanping (雲杉坪). In the Naxi legend, it is called the 'Third state of the Jade Dragon' and the 'Garden of Eternal Love'.
