'69 Woodstock Festival Stage Area at Bethel Woods

Bethel, NY view map

In 1969, on this sloping dairy farm field owned by Max Yasgur just outside of Bethel,NY, 450,000 people joined for three days of Peace & Music. Concertgoers enjoyed music from 32 of the best recording artists of the time including Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, The Grateful Dead, The Band, and Jimi Hendrix.

I arrived 40 years late. I'm sorry I didn't get to see the festival itself but I enjoyed the echoes.

(the original view is slow to load, but gives you a feel for the place)

Didn't arrive until late Saturday (Canned Heat was performing). Was tired and tried catching up on some sleep (I was the designated driver) . . . until Sly and the Family Stone showed up. I remember trying to see them on stage. What a shock! They were sooooo tiny from the hill but the sound was as if they were just about 50 yards away. Incredible!

I'm old enough to remember Woodstock, and was old enough to young enough to be grounded by my parents if I went.

That picture is haunting, and "Holy Ground" to the people who made it there.

Seems like something my parents should have loaded us into the station wagon for. We would have loaded the kids into the green wagon and hit the road.

Love you
