My solution to the "string pod / chain pod".

60 retractable seamstress tape, 1oz.
60" retractable seamstress tape, 1oz.		 5'6 retractable chain pod, 5.5 oz
5'6" retractable chain pod, 5.5 oz

The retractable chain pod is made from a cheap retractable dog leach (dollar store item), the leach itself was replaced with a ball chain from the hardware store.
