Thanks to fellow PBaser, Robert Becker, for identifying this structure.
The APU can power the hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic system. It can warm or cool a static aircraft and have it ready for passenger loading in 20 or 30 minutes. The APU is normally used on the ground, but if needed may be started and used in the air.
The "heat wave" coming out of the exhaust of APU at the tail end of the fuselage caused the background buildings to be blurred in this particular manner.
