OK... so I have ranted about all of the trash that is left along the local lakes and the time has come to do something about it!
In my car I now carry garbage bags and long rubber gloves and will pick up trash as well as do photography.
Do I like picking up trash that others have left behind? No, not really but I feel a responsibility to respect our beautiful earth and help protect the creatures that live here.
As of May, 2013, I have joined a volunteer group, "For the Love of the Lake" to help clean up the lakeshore area of White Rock Lake.
This is a fun group that meets the second Saturday of each month in the morning. They feed you some pastry and juice and we get our bags, gloves (I use my own) and a picker for reaching the garbage and then off we go for two hours of clean up duty.
It's the people that make it a fun activity. There are all ages who participate and even a couple dogs come along. And it is rather comical to hear some of the comments as people pick up the trash, like:
I found a shoe!
Look... here's a little truck.
Ewwwww... there's a diaper, and it has poop in it!
What the heck is that?
So I wander and pick up trash and laugh with the pickers, and take a few photos along the way.
At the end of our two hours we return to the FTLOTL office and share pizza that has been donated by a local restaurant.
(Thank you Edward for getting this shot of me as I wandered the shoreline filling my garbage bags.)
