$1.00 for an instant ancestor!

I bought this piece of art at a household auction many years ago in New Jersey. It cost $1.00 and I seemed to be the only one interested in it.
I know nothing about it. It is not signed and was in delicate condition.
It appears to be a charcoal drawing stretched and nailed on a pine frame. I found it interesting that the face is very finely done; whereas, the rest of the artwork is rather primitive.
The face and haircut looks like it may be a little boy, but the child is wearing a skirt, and the clothing appears from the "victorian" era. I still like it and wish I knew more...

Interesting find. I think in those days, only wealthier people had portraits done. Can you check with the local historical society?
