Red tide takes its toll on fish life and local businesses.

The three to four mile hike up the beach from Clearwater to Caladesi Island
State Park is littered with rotting giant grouper, dead sea gulls, and a
large assortment of smaller fish during the Labor Day weekend. These
creatures, ignored by scavengers due to their toxicity, seem to melt into
the sand in the stifling hot sun. As illustrated here, very few people turn
out, on what would ordinarily be an over crowded beach on the holiday,
because of health-hazardous water and, of course, the smell.
