February 14. What is it!

Thankyou bbellngr (below) who has ID'ed it as an 'adult ant lion'
one of the myrmeleontids, insect order Neuroptera.

Very cropped.
It had long wings similar to a dragonfly. It looked like a long weird moth.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Sheila, 'weird' is putting it mildly. Have never seen anything even close. Fantastic details. Sandy

Great shot! It is one of the myrmeleontids; it is an adult ant lion. The larvae are also called "doddle bugs." Check this web site for more info on them in Australiahttp://www.geocities.com/brisbane_lacewings/Myrmeleontidae.htm
Don't know the entire range of the group but they are common in North America and Mexico for sure. This family falls into the insect order Neuroptera. Again, great shot!

I don't know but stay away. Far, far away. :) Super detailed close up and what a weird bug. Those striped things coming from his head. I don't like bug photos except dragonflies as a rule but this guy is cool.

Very unusual! I like the satin finish of it though. Looks like it's got a slice of lemon on it's eye!
