This is the church where Pres Washington attended while in the White house, and before becoming the first leader of this nation. The distances of Sunday church attendance were far from his residence at Mt Vernon, and the White House at the day of horses and buggies.
Gen Lee, Commander of the Confederate also attended this church before the Civil War. Many presidents had lived in Alexandria and attended this church while in power, i.e. Kennedy, Nixon, Carter, and Clinton, etc.
On the Right of the church there was a marble headstone on the wall commemorating Gen Lee, on the Left was Pres Washington’s. At the front in the middle pew, a golden brass plate was placed at the top of hand resting dedicated to Gen Lee where he was used to stand. A first “cube” on the left was reserved for the presidential family of Pres Washington. In the winter, heated bricks were placed underneath the seat benches to keep the attendants warm.
The church is a national historical site, and tour guides are provided by church members. Donations are used to maintain the site.
