Amazing. My first time to see this. Such mastery of timing to capture a moment where the man emerges from the darkness and is sprayed with light for an instant. Fantastic composition as well - this is really a beautiful image. Definitely agree this would look great in an exhibition

Before I came to this photo, I saw it in a thumbnail several time, underneath the images you posted later. I knew I was going to adore this one. The lighting is spot on, the tones are magnificent, and so is the subject of choice. V.

Dust is our destiny. We rise and fall from this earthness. As whitecaps blown among the gusts of conception.Caught for a moment in startling glory. Before subsiding into the depths again.Shuffled over and over.Within the rhythms of a lifetime, of a nation, of a civilization.

Wow. This is really a neat shot. Technically, very well done. I wouldn't even know how to do this without PS. Love the composition and the feelings the shot evokes. Strong vote. One of your best!

You must have used either spot metering or something close to it to get this kind of exposure, Kal. You also must have looked for someone who was working in a shadowed area, yet still partially in sunlight. By exposing on the highlights, the shadows go black and this figure floats in a void. It is more than a brilliant technical accomplishment in lighting -- it is an startlingly expressive image rich in abstraction, incongruity (faceless), and human values: strength and determination applied to a timeless task.

I'm totally amazed by this image, Kal. All is beautiful, but the lighting is what makes it so special.

His component parts deconstructed but held together with strength and purpose. This is pure photographic magic with balance of daylight/deepshadow and motion/statuesque form . masterpiece.

I dont know how long you had to wait Kal for him to move into that exact position but, this is a beautifully crafted image. KMc

Love the composition, shadows and action. It all comes together wonderfully.

Really a exceptional photo utilizing a unique mix of strong light and deep shadows. It speaks to me of the people who do things we usually take for granted. We know someone cleans, but not often see the people. It's as Jen said: the person seems to come out of nowhere to clean, then promptly back into the hidden shadows. I think I can say this is one of my favorites from you, and you have a lot of great ones! :)

That series with shadowed figures would make an superb exhibition, sensitive, sharp and expressive, almost surreal. It shows an amazing respect of the human worker while being a beautiful piece of art.

One of the most enchanting and capturing photos I have seen.
The play of light and shadow is like a mirror labyrinth for the observer.
There is nearly an elegance of ballet in the gesture, as if the man was on a stage and someone had created a choreography for his daily work.
Fantastic!

The power of light and abstraction. You created tension on the hands and the feet, steadily supporting the huge broom and dusting the "gold". The hat was trying to shield his tired body from the harsh sun. A hard day of labour, hopefully with a good harvest. Another powerful one, Kal.
Guest 21-Aug-2006 16:04
Excellent use of low exposure. Enough light to see the physical work - but almost in a abstract sense.
Guenter Eh21-Aug-2006 15:41
This is an "exhibition" foto - a masterpiece - no doubt Kal!

......Kal, I am almost speechless~~~~
I can hardly believe that you can make such degree of abstraction during daytime.. You use the shadow and the light masterfully creating an incredible ghost world that is so unexpected... The hands are coming out of no where, and the hat is suspending on the air, the gold dust is as surreal as the ghostlike figure.. A masterpiece from Kal!!!
