Very much impact in it's visual and metaphorical contrast.

A frequent Khogalian theme: the symbols of affluence and power juxtaposed with the realities of poverty and urban chaos and decay. Beautifully drawn. By night the contrasts are even more dramatic because there are fewer distractions.

This is one of those shots that I love. When you bring to life those China contrasts it's always a lesson and not only in photography ;) I like it, for this and for a lot more.

Great contrast indeed! As Marisa notice it, the cyclist, as the other bodys, seem to escape from this sharp modernity and make the picture so stronger. Excellent, Kal!

Love the story-telling aspect to the photo (old and new), and great composition. The image is a little dark though.

Great contrast of 2 worlds!
It really feels like the new world is rising bright and high. Great capture Kal!

The "Pearl Tower" reminds me of a top of a gigantic Christmas tree, out of place...
A starship ready to take off toward a technological future, while human beings, too slow to follow, choose voluntarily to run away to the opposite direction...
Once again you gave us so many elements to invent our own story to read in your image.

Great street scene with the cyclist, the presence of the tower and the contrast with the old city adds a lot to it.

A quill hovering over ink. That liquid darkness which runs with a thousand ants.Their infinite shadowed footsteps dripping in between the fractured lines. As mistaken punctuation to be erased. The black bloodstains cleansed by modern fate and fortune.

the tower... so close, so far...
in the middle of there... bt another world compared to there...

The old city is doomed to die but Shanghai has had many rebirths and, like the phoenix, this is not the last. The cyclist has the insouciant expression of one who has seen this all before. The question, it seems, is why WE perceive it as a threat.

Apologies to all in Shanghai for my architectural ignorance ..spike is a bit derogatory. Great cultural contrasts here..
Guest 14-Feb-2006 12:14
That tower looks like a threat. As if it will attack any second, and the cyclist is not aware of anything.

The "Pearl Tower" David...symbol of Shanghai and economic progress....

That spike (sorry i am unaware of the Shanghai skyline) rises like a malevolent eye over this street, catching the fleeing cyclist in its gaze. H G Wells would have approved!
