The tide fell away from the shore. Its current etching folds, wrinkles and rivulets across the sand.Moulding the features with firm potter's fingers. That flowed around a wordless muffled hollow. And glistened the boulder eyes starring away with accepted fate.Sculpting a story mask to be worn briefly.Until ocean time would rise again and wash it all away with one sweep of its palm.

Incredible clarity. The detail and texture, throughout his skin and his clothing...beautifully done. The little details, like the age spots, the frayed collar and the interest in what he might be fetching out of his pocket make this classic. Maybe one of the best candids I've ever seen on pbase. I vote.

Great portrait, Kal. You have a way for these. You certainly know how to make a contact with people. This one is so expressive, so full of presence. V

This is very interesting Kal, had the image been focused on the mans face, it wouldn't be as strong an image, the soft focus look makes it more timeless. I have a tendancy to select focus and work with that...your soft look makes this image MORE!!! Hmmmm

It is indeed an excellent work. And more special because this was a street shot and he wasn't aware that his photo was being taken, right? It's great that you shot this one at the same time he was going through his pocket... somehow this makes the image a lot more interesting, at least for me, because it seems that it's a gesture that is combided with the man's stare... Great focus! You've got all his wrinkles there and they were important to make the portrait work so well.
Congratulations Kal.

He is not aware of you and your camera, where he is totally being himself. From what he wears, we can get a rough idea of his social status, but the look of his eyes and mouth and those wrinkles tells who he really is inside. Great great portrait!!

Excellent.

I think you are right Alister. It's in the field of focus, but slightly backfocused. Not deliberate ;-)

This is quite an image Kal. My one question is about the focus; to my eye it seems the camera has focussed slightly behind the face, top of the cap looks sharpest. Was that intentional?

It's like a continuation of yesterday's image, where I saw the old and the new China. This is definitely old China. Some new China tomorrow?

The longer we look upon him, the more we learn about him. Detail is the reason. Henri Cartier Bresson once said "Wrinkles are a mark of life. After a while everyone gets the face they deserve." We study his face, his skin, his demeanor, and we come to know him. A portrait must go beyond just showing what someone looks like. Rather, it should tell us who they are. And that is what you have done here, Kal.

Wow. I really like this. So many storeis in this man's face. Works really well in b&w and is a tad bit sharper than some of your other shots. I like the way the eyes look away from the camera.
