There was intended some contrast between the state of the place and the how hygienic the barber is. China is always full of this juxtaposition of unhygienic environement and obsession with hygiene. Taxi drivers keep gloves on, the lady in the mask herehttp://www.pbase.com/shangheye/image/48326856 is another good example. At the end of it all this will be a clean cut, despite the state of the shop.

but since your title is not ironic this pic recalls me the one of the shoes outised the house.
if a man working in a messy place still care of wearing a clean smock, I mean, this is all about struggle, resistance, unresiliation... human dignity.

I find this picture very interesting and in a way sarcastic, since this barber shop is so untidy and dilapidated and dirty and also the posture of the client has nothing relaxing, it looks as if he was receiving a punishment, but among all that the hairdresser wears a white and clean smock...
This pictures tells us so many things and it's a rich element of cultural information.
