Star Wars Episode IV was partially filmed at a location a few miles from Tozeur. For the home planet of Luke Skywalker, the desert planet of ‘Tatooine’, George Lucas chose the landscapes and native architecture of Tunisia (Tataouine is a real Tunisian town, some miles south of the movie location).

Luke’s sunken home was in the troglodyte town of Matmata (located half-way between the city of Douz and the Island of Djerba), where homes are burrowed into the soft local sandstone from the sides of circular pits.
