Oil and Water Gallery

The pictures in this gallery were taken with a macro lens focusing on oil drops floating on the surface of a glass container filled with water. Color is created by using a colorful background underneath the glass container. Examples could be wrapping paper, paint sample cards, colorful shirts, beads, marbles, etc. The 3-D look of some of the pictures is purely an illusion. All the oil bubbles are on the surface of water, with the differing size bubbles giving the 3-D effect. I also started using Photoshop Elements on some of the pictures to give them an even more abstract appearance.

My really simple setup for these pictures (as seen below) includes:
A Fuji S200 EXR camera mounted on a tabletop tripod, and equipped with a Raynox DCR 150 Macro Converter. A level should be used to ensure the camera is level in both the x and y axis.
A 9" x 9" piece of glass sitting on two strips of wood to allow color backgrounds to slide underneath the glass without disturbing the oil and water solution
A beer mug sitting on the piece of glass to hold the oil and water
Canola oil or Olive oil applied about 10 - 15 drops to the water surface with an eye dropper
