Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is often refered to as the eigth wonder of the world. The Ngorongoro Crater is the center piece of the NCA. The crater is believed to have occurred about 2,000,000 years ago when a mountain, about as high as Kilimanjaro (19,000+'), had a volcanic eruption that resulted in a caldera about 12 miles across. The rim of the caldera is about 7,500' high, with the floor about 2,000' below, surrounded by an unbroken 2,000' wall all around it. It is estimated that over 30,000 animals live in the crater. The NCA is also the home of Olduvai Gorge, where Mary Leaky discovered a 1.75 million-year-old Homo Habilis, who represents man's first step on the ladder of human evolution.
