Approximately 2 weeks later, while tending their nest, the male took off either in search of more nesting material, or for food. While he was gone, another male flew toward the nest and tried to get the female to accept him as a mate. The female told him in no uncertain terms to get lost, and he subsequently left and flew back to his own nest in a nearby palm tree. A naturalist watching this, thought that possibly this male had lost his mate and was trying to get the female to be his new mate.
