Bariloche is a city at the foot of the Andes on the shores of lake Nahuel Haupi. It is also located only 50 miles or so from the June 4, 2011 volcanic eruption in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain. With the prevailing winds coming from the west, the volcanic ash caused most damage in Argentina, rather than Chile. Six months later, volcanic ash is still causing airport and flight disruptions throughout Argentina. It is estimated that it will take approximately 10 years to get everything cleaned up and back to normal.
