Shanghai's hi-tech German built Maglev train runs from the international airport at Pudong to a terminus that still lies well outside the CBD. It's a technological tour-de-force that whisks you along at up to 430 kph. Unfortunately it's making huge losses as the daily fare revenue only covers a third of the bank interest. They're relying on extending the line inland to Hangzhou and perhaps even north to Beijing to amortise the enormous investment, but there's tremendous public concern about levels of magnetic radiation trackside, and the dubious financial projections of future profitability. The manufacturers recommend a 200m buffer zone either side of the track, but the Chinese planners only allowed for 22m, hence storms of protest!
