Fortunately, now being 75 years old I don't carry a heavy tripod, and just do the best I can with less setup. Still prefer the tripod though.

you are certainly at greater risk after dark, fiddling with tripods and/or long exposure times - I have felt vulnerable in the same situation but the Bondi Beach shots at the foot of this galleryhttp://www.pbase.com/travelgame/sydney caused me the most grief, attacked by the guardians of political correctness in the form of half-naked lifesavers.
