The quick-reaction force (stationed on Okinawa)
for the Pacific, the 173rd was the first major Army
unit to deploy to Vietnam in May 1965. The first
Australian battalion to serve in Vietnam came under
this brigade until Australia formed a brigade-sized
task force in 1966. The 173rd served in III CTZ until
its withdrawal in Aug 1971.
