5th Army Pre-WW II (Wool)
Worn from:
8 September 1926 - 2 April 1943.
The Fifth Army pre-WW II design was not worn during WW II but
is displayed because it was not officially cancelled until the
new design was adopted and many of the old design patches were
made during the war. The original design was forwarded for
approval to the Adjutant General's Office on September 8th,
1926. The colors red and white are the distinguishing colors of
the field army, and both the five stars and pentagon (five sided)
design suggest the unit's number. A new design was requested in
February of 1943 because when the 5th Army was activated in
Morocco in WW II its Commanding General (Mark Clark) desired
a patch more representative of the area where it was formed.
