4th Army Green Back Variation

26 January 1927 - Late 1991.

The Fourth Army was on active duty with Headquarters at the
Presidio of San Francisco, California, when the United States
entered WW II.

Prior to WW II, the Fourth Army was assigned the mission of
forming the Western Defense Command which was intended to protect
the Western United States and Alaska in the event of war.

The 4th Army was given the responsibility of training and providing
support for over 280,000 troops as well as operating the Louisiana
maneuver area.

The Fourth Army is credited with having trained and equipped
approximately half of the combat units that were shipped overseas
during WW II and remained on duty at Fort Sam Houston after the
war.

The patch worn by the Fourth Army was approved for wear on
January 26th, 1927, even though the Army wasn't actually
activated until August of 1932. The colors red and white
represent the distinguishing flags for field armies,
and the four-leaf clover suggests the unit number
