84th Infantry Division:
The Railsplitters
The 84th Division was activated as a component in the Army
of The United States on October 15th, 1942, with Headquarters
at Camp Howze, Texas. After one change of station and
participation in the 1943 Louisiana maneuvers, the Division
embarked for the European Theater in September of 1944
The shoulder patch worn by the 84th Division was approved
for wear on February 16th, 1924. Although the Division had
acted as a replacement Division in France in WW I, there is
no record that any shoulder patch was approved for wear by
the AEF. The basis for the design of the approved patch is
from the WW I nickname of the 84th as the "Lincoln Division."
The unit was originally organized with personnel from Illinois,
Indiana, and Kentucky, which are all states that Abraham Lincoln
was associated with, and Lincoln as a young man split rails
for a living.
Campaigns:
World War I,
World War II
(Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe).
